Print-On-Demand Package
Print on demand, or POD, is exactly what it sounds like. New authors or authors with limited resources are able to print as many or as few books as needed at any given time. In fact, DRP can print one book at a time for authors, if they are so inclined. Although there are still one-time costs for initial production and editorial services, this model proves to be the answer to many aspiring author's prayers.
The initial investment is smaller, and there is no risk of unsold inventory sitting in warehouses. At the same time, on-demand books benefit from the same production quality and distribution of a large-scale offset print package. The per-book cost is higher than that of larger print runs, but DRP does offer competitive bulk rates and the option to leverage a successful on-demand package later into an offset print package with no additional production costs.
For a lot of authors, the benefits of POD publishing far outweigh the risks. The first, of course, is that it's relatively inexpensive. Books are printed quickly and cheaply. This savings is passed on to the author who receives a higher royalty rate than she/he would have if she/he went with a traditional publisher.
Of course, printing 3,000 books at a time will reduce your per-book print price significantly. For authors with a build in audience, who are almost guaranteed to sell more then a 1,000 copies, we do strongly recommend offset printing of at least 3,000 copies. The reason is that, once you hit the 1,000 mark in sales you are already running a profit on your project cost. At that point, you’ll have an additional 2,000 books paid for and all ebook royalties and trade sales are extra as well.
